Vacation Time!
It’s year end and soon Best Buddies will close for December.
The holiday season is always packed full of fun and magic. Regardless of your beliefs, or how your family celebrates Christmas, there are loads of ways you can enjoy the holiday spirit with your Buddy.
Here are a few fun ideas to keep your young ones occupied while counting down the days till Christmas…
My Christmas Tree
Age: 16 months and up
Development: Helps to enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Supplies :
Green paint
Brown paint
White cardboard
A star
Start by explaining that you guys are going to make a Christmas tree. Throw a bit of green paint in a container that is large enough to dip their hand in. Now help to press their hand on the white cardboard.
The idea is to create the shape of a pine tree. Add the trunk of the tree with some brown paint and paste the star right on the top. Go wild and add decorations to your tree, use your Buddy’s finger tips to create baubles with other paint colours or paste any shiny objects onto your creation. This activity might get messy, so wear an old outfit if you don’t want to get full of paint, glitter and glue!
Christmas Search
Age: 16 months and up
Development: Cognitive, enhancing problem-solving strategies.
Supplies:
Various Christmas items
Begin by showing your Buddy an assortment of different Christmas items, like a Santa Claus, tree ornaments and decorations, gift boxes, cookies and milk (if you leave some out for Santa) or any other goodies you guys use during the festive season. Carefully go through the list, describing each object individually, focusing on its colour, shape, and size.
Next up, keep them busy with something else while the objects get hidden. Start your hunt and help them to find each item. While looking for the Christmas treasure items, use directional words like forward, backwards, up and down to give them clues!
My Favorite Thing
Age: 3 years and up
Development: Social-Emotional, expressing opinions.
Supplies:
Crayons, paint, pencils
White paper
Place a few blank sheets of paper, paint, pencils or crayons on a table and explain to your Buddy that you are going to all draw your favorite thing about Christmas.
Ask them what they like best about Christmas, why they chose it and how it looks, smells or tastes like. Allow them to use any colors they like. Keep on praising them, telling them how great their ideas, creativity, and efforts are. The main aim is to inspire your Buddy to express their own interests and opinions.
My Ornament
Age: 20 months and up
Development: Social-Emotional, identifying family members and developing self-awareness.
Supplies:
Coloured paper
Family photos
Non-toxic glue
Decorating materials
Markers
Scissors
Cut circles out using various colours, one for every family member and pet. Let your Buddy choose a picture of each member and help them paste one photo in every circle. They can decorate their baubles (circles) with anything using paint, crayons, pencils, markers, glitter, magazine pictures or stickers. Write each family member’s name on their circle. Paste a piece of twine or ribbon on the back and hang it on the Christmas tree.
My Christmas Story
Age: 4 years and up
Development: Social-Emotional, describing the different roles each character plays during Christmas.
Supplies:
Crayons
3 paper sheets stapled together to form a tiny book
Chat to your Buddy about the different Christmas characters: Santa Claus, his elves, the reindeers, etc. Explain the various roles, and mention how even they play their own role during the holidays for example decorating the tree, making or baking treats and wrapping their home made crafts as presents. Tell them to draw a character on each page of their mini booklet, including what they do. They can draw themselves as well. Now ask your Buddy about each drawing and let them explain the different characters that are included during Christmas.
It’s All About Family
There are tons of ways to explore the excitement of the holiday season together. It doesn’t matter if your family doesn’t celebrate Christmas, you can still incorporate your specific holiday elements into the activities mentioned. The holiday season is all about making memories, spending time together and helping your little ones grow through play!
This is a special time during the year when we think back and remember our happy times, sad times, trying times, silly times and everything in between! We celebrate our victories, make adjustments to lessen our failures and plan for the future. I hope your festive season is filled with joy, laughter, love and most important of all – HOPE.
Have a blessed holiday and make sure you relax, because next year we all begin over with a great, big BANG!!
It’s Recipe Time Again:
Christmas Sugar Cookies
These simple sugar cookies are ready for any size or type of cookie cutter. Let your Buddy choose a shape, and start baking!
The cookies are fast to make and can be decorated with just about anything. Get the whole family involved and give a tin filled with home made cookies to all your loved ones.
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
Instructions
In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Using an electric stand mixer, beat butter and sugar until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Add eggs, vanilla extract, and almond extract; beat until combined. Reduce mixer speed and gradually spoon flour mixture in with butter mixture, beating on low speed until dough is smooth and well-blended.
Turn dough out on work surface. Cut dough in half and shape each portion into a compact disk. Wrap separately in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 180°C. Unwrap 1 dough disk and roll on lightly-floured work surface to 1 cm thickness (lightly coat rolling pin with flour to prevent sticking). Cut into chosen shapes and place cookies 5 cm apart on parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Refrigerate cookies on baking sheets for 5 to 10 minutes to help them keep their shape when baked.
Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until cookies just start to turn golden around the edges, rotating halfway through baking. Cool cookies completely on wire racks, about 20 minutes. Repeat process with remaining dough.
Allow the kids to decorate with icing sugar you already mixed in all the Christmas colours, adding sprinkles, silver balls or sweets.
